Many moving companies offer tips on moving house — There are lots of moving tips out there, but what are some things to avoid?

Whether you’re moving into your first home, a new rental, or your partner’s house, these are our biggest mistakes to avoid when moving…

1. Last-minute packing

Last-minute packing is a recipe for disaster. Always start collecting boxes and packing materials a good few weeks before moving day. Give yourself plenty of time to plan how you want to organise things, such as the items you want to pack together and separately.

In our experience, last-minute packing doesn’t just make you stressed, it can make your packing ineffective and frustrating in the days to come!

Disorganised labelling

Frantic packing makes any clear organisation take a back seat. If you’re shoving items into boxes on moving day, you’ll probably forget to label things properly. This might not seem too important, but it can be a real pain when it comes to unpacking your belongings.

You won’t just have to deal with one box. If you can’t find something, you’ll have to go through every box until you find it. Good labelling can also help your removal company prioritise what goes where in the moving van.

Not creating a few “open first” boxes

Just as you can take hand luggage onto an aeroplane for items you want to keep easily accessible, it’s helpful to create a few “open first” boxes full of particularly important items that will be useful for the first few days in your new house.

Leave packing to the last minute and considerations like these go out the window!

2. Forgetting to book a removal company

Most people will need a moving company to help them transport their belongings safely and effectively into their new home. However, moving companies need notice. They’ll have a busy schedule filled with all the moves they’ve been hired to help with. If you call them at the last minute, they might be booked up.

As soon as you know your moving date, find a removal company removal company you’d like to use. Once you’re happy that they are a reputable, reliable, and cost-effective company, get them booked!

Once you have your moving company sorted, you’ll be able to relax and focus on getting your home packed and cleaned for the new tenants or buyers.

3. Forgetting utilities for your new home

Moving can be an all-consuming activity, which makes it easy to forget things like utilities. However, it’s important to set them up before you move to your new home. Otherwise, you could find yourself without WiFi, water, gas, electricity, milk delivery, cable TV, etc.

Of course, you can sort this out when you arrive, but you might just want to unpack, unwind, and enjoy your new home. Organise your utilities before you move and you’ll certainly thank yourself later.

4. Doing it all yourself

One of the biggest mistakes we see people make is trying to complete their entire move themselves. When they realise it’s best to get some help, it’s either moving day or too late to book a removal firm or find available family or friends.

Don’t feel obliged to move your belongings with several trips, contact a removal company. Likewise, don’t feel you need to pack everything yourself. Local family and friends will probably be happy to give you a hand!
