When planning a house move, there’s a long list of tasks to take care of. Preparing your furniture for storage might be one of the last things on the list, but it’s also one of the most important. A trustworthy removal company will take good care of your belongings, but it never hurts to be extra sure. As experienced home movers in High Wycombe, here are some of the tips that we’ve found work best when getting ready to move.
Prepare early
Perhaps this goes without saying, but the first step to preparing your furniture is making sure you leave yourself plenty of time. Packing in advance will ensure you’re not rushing at the last minute, saving you the stress and avoiding the possibility of accidentally forgetting something. Choose a designated open area of the house to be a packing area for your furniture to give yourself room.
Want to be extra sure you’re on top of everything? Our moving checklist has everything you need to be prepared for the move.
Wipe everything down
Before you start packing, it’s a good idea to give your furniture a quick clean. It doesn’t have to be a deep clean (you can leave that for when you get set up in your new home) but a wipe down with a damp cloth will remove the worst of any built-up grime. This will help protect surfaces during the moving process and keep your furniture in good condition, as well as avoid bringing in any dirt to your new home.
Disassemble furniture
If a piece of furniture can be disassembled, disassemble it. This makes it lighter, smaller, and easier to move, and reduces the possibility of hitting walls or door frames. This includes things like tables, sofas, and bed frames. If the furniture is particularly complex, it could be a good idea to take a picture beforehand to reference when reassembling.
If the owner’s manual is available, always use that as a guide to see how you should disassemble your furniture. You can store smaller pieces of hardware, such as screws, in sealable plastic bags and tape them to the furniture. That way, you can easily find everything you need when it’s time to reassemble.
Pack your furniture
Packing up your furniture will help protect it and your property while moving, as well as give it an extra layer of security in the van. There are several different materials used for different purposes:
Moving blankets
Often available to buy or rent from your home removal company, moving blankets are ideal for protecting large wooden pieces of furniture during the move.
Bubble wrap
Bubble wrap is great for protecting fragile elements of furniture such as glass and other decorative objects.
Cling film
This can keep movable elements shut and help protect them from dust and grime.
Packing tape
Packing tape can secure moving blankets, seal boxes, and keep everything in place. You can never have enough packing tape!
Corrugated cardboard
Put glass panels between two sheets of corrugated cardboard and wrap them in bubble wrap for extra security.
